Calling All Male Bloggers!!

Recently, I've read a few posts that have commented on the absence of men in the blogging world. The first was in the comments section of Grad School Reject's post, and the other was in this post by Fictional Rockstar. Though I don't think she was referring to male bloggers specifically, the question did come up in the comments section.

I was wondering- why are there so few men that blog? I know there are many that enjoy writing. I know that many men like to share their opinions, or give advice on things. Is it the medium? But that doesn't make sense, because I know they like computers. And they aren't shy because they have very revealing profiles all over the online dating sites, and places like myspace.

Maybe it's the subjects they write about. Maybe there are a lot more out there, but we female bloggers don't find them because we aren't particularly interested in the topics they write about. I do notice that the male bloggers tend to write on specific areas: politics, technology, business or some male specialty. And some try to be controversial/sensational by going the "women hating" route. Very few are personal. Not that I necessarily want to see a bunch of male dating blogs detailing the adventures of a bachelor (though I guess that could be enlightening). But it would be interesting to get the male perspective on life issues, wouldn't it?

I definitely have my favorite male bloggers that I read pretty regularly:

Arjewtino (very creative, good writer, charming and cute)

Diary of an Ad Man (I enjoy hearing about the evolution of his new business)

Drawing Conclusions on the Wall (Interesting topics, insightful)

Home Improvement Ninja (Hysterically funny and original)

I Now Pronounce You (Heartwarming, touching, romantic)

LMNtl Attraction (A single guy's view of women)

Media Concepts (Thought-provoking, well-written, informative)

The Friday Flare Up (Wise beyond his years, makes me think)

Now of course, when I imagine male bloggers, they all look pretty much like the picture I have posted. Which makes their writing even better.

Who are your favorite male bloggers? And if YOU are part of that mysterious demographic, please, by all means- introduce yourself! :)

I-66. Pleasure to meet you.

Can I count myself twice because I am the sole operator of two blogs? Of course one is strictly soccer-specific, so maybe not.

I'm sorry to disappoint, but I look nothing like the guy in that photo, but that's mostly because I don't wear underwear.

Thanks for the mention. Has anyone taken a survey of the ratio of male to female bloggers? I had the impression that there were as many or more male bloggers as female ones.

P.S. you really like that guy in the picture? He looks like Luke Perry's twisted half brother.

At 6:37 PM, Blogger Aileen said...

I-66- pleasure to meet you and your blog! You DO get extra credit for two blogs...plenty of women are into soccer. (I just read your hand-washing post...icky and funny!) And thanks for sharing about the underwear.

media concepts- No official survey that I know of- I'm just going by what I see, and what I hear from other bloggers. And Luke Perry? ewwwwww! I don't think so! But I guess I wasn't really looking at his face- just an overall sexy "guy in boxers at computer" look. :)

At 7:25 PM, Blogger Grad School Reject said...

Hi Aileen - You are far too kind to me, and thank you. Thank you for the mention, and most importantly thanks for considering me as offering male opinions. I've gotten a few messages that have let me know that I come across more female than male :)

I'm honestly not sure why there is such a discrepancy, but hopefully one of your commenters can shed some light.

Is that a laptop he's using? Looks more like an advanced Etch-A-Sketch. No wonder there are so few male bloggers. We're idiots.

At 12:05 AM, Anonymous David said...

hey Aileen,

First, thanks for the plug for my blog. That kind of thing keeps us male bloggers motivated :-)

I'm not sure why most general bloggers seem to be female. (There are lots of subject specific blogs by men as you note - I'm familiar with tons of software/geek blogs myself).

I think men are less comfortable writing about intimate personal things at least until they get to a more "mature" age like mois. Maybe they're less comfortable writing at all. Last summer I took a creative writing course at Chautauqua, which was fantastic. !0 women, 2 men.

P.S. I agree with media concepts about the guy in the picture. And, the guy must spend an hour a day shaving every hair on his body. One more thing -- he'd be much cooler if he had a Mac laptop.

At 12:50 AM, Blogger Aileen said...

GSR- You are most welcome. And no, you don't come across as more female at all! (And I'm sure your wife would agree with me:)

Arjewtino- you made me laugh! You are right, that must be an old picture- that laptop looks ridiculous!

David- welcome! And I'm glad your wife Barbara coerced you into becoming a blogger. Sounds like a creative writing class is a great place for a guy to meet women!

And why are all you guys being so hard on my eye candy? I thought only we women did that...;)

At 1:34 AM, Blogger Geoff_Livingston said...

Hey, thanks for the hat tip. Did you know that it's not only blogs? Two out of three books are published by women now. And more than 55% of college students are women.

I'm afraid men don't think it's cool anymore to be literate. How messed up is that? From the founding fathers to Talladega Nights in less than 250 years. Pretty sad really.

PS I wish I looked that good.

This is an excellent follow up! I was going to mention I-66, he's great!

I have one comment about the picture(okay, truth be told, several, but I'm going with...) -- dude, close the fridge.
Been doing some research in the way-back machine on your soundtrack question too, but got too bogged down re-listening to my old stuff to choose any.

I happen to be partial to Drawing Conclusions on the Wall, but I also really enjoy MediaConcepts, who sees life critically and honestly, and Ulysses, who writes epic novels, not your ordinary Blog posts.

At 4:00 AM, Blogger jterry said...

I'm jterry, and I'm also pleased to meet you. Sadly, I only manage to exercise about once a year, so I also look nothing like the man in the photo. Even if I did, I don't own cute purple underwear. :)

At 7:37 AM, Blogger Lizza said...

You have something here. I don't know why women bloggers outnumber the men; but the ones I read regularly don't have any particular specialty. I just really enjoy their writing. Some of them are:

The Dragon, Unreliable Witness, Prometheus, Jeremy, Matt-man, and Yaxlich.

I'll take a peek at your regular reads. Thanks for sharing!

Flattered, Ms. Academic.

Hi, I am the Prince of Petworth and I don't remember giving you permission to use my picture!

At 12:48 PM, Blogger Aileen said...

Geoff- thanks for the info, I didn't know that about authors/college students. And women also are starting their own small businesses at a faster rate than men.

MA- Thanks for the comment! And thanks for prompting the thought on this subject :)

Ulysses- Welcome! I look forward to checking out your blog- Barbara gave it a good reference. And again- didn't realize the pic would get such scrutiny;) ha!

Barbara- sounds like you have really good blog taste. Of course some of that good taste seems to carry over into real life...

jterry- Nice to meet you! I guess you'll just have to go pick up a pair of cute purple boxers to do your blogging in.

Lizza- Yeaaa! I'm so glad you shared some of your favorites! I'm looking forward to checking them out.

Prince- Ooops! Is there something we can work out? :) (And pay no mind to the criticisms put forth by your fellow male bloggers...)

All the male bloggers mentioned above are GREAT writers. There are so many more, but here's a brief list of the ones whose blogs I never miss:

Jeff Simmerman
A Unique Alias
Home Improvements Ninja
M in Baltimore
Miniver Cheevy
Sean Hennessey
Every one of the Playaz, especially Phil who is always right about everything

This is only a partial list from my links. There are so many others!!

Reya- Thank you for expanding our horizons! Yeaaa!

Reya is right that we are always right.

I'm a dude, and I blog. I think the overall blogosphere actually does skew towards men, though.

Either way, nice to 'meet' you, unless you've read my blog and decided I hadn't made the cut.

At 8:37 PM, Blogger honeykbee said...

Needtsza looks just like the dude in the photo, except with a goatee. And a bong.

At 8:47 PM, Blogger Miles said...

I think bloggers in general skew slightly male. But DC blogs tend towards social/trendy/dating/romantic themes, which go female in a landslide.

At 10:04 PM, Blogger HomeImprovementNinja said...

Thanks for the props. I always wonder who is reading this stuff...and why.

At 12:21 AM, Blogger Aileen said...

Phil- thanks for letting me know!

Jeff- Nice to meet you too! I haven't read your blog yet...but now how can I resist?

HoneyK- I guess I need to check out Needzta!

Miles- yes, I'm hearing that. I wonder why the female bloggers feel like there's a shortage of male bloggers?

Ninja- well I'm reading! Pretty much for the entertainment value :)

At 1:13 AM, Blogger DC Discombobulated said...

i am a dude and i blog too.. but i 'photo' blog so i am not sure if that is the same thing or not.

At 4:29 AM, Blogger Dennis! said...

Uh... yeah that dude is hot.

I know tones of male bloggers but I think we're all out numbered by the women.

At 8:04 PM, Blogger Josh said...

I'm Josh. Nice to meet you. I don't know what I'd do without my blog.

At 8:10 PM, Blogger Josh said...

Oh, and I look much more like the man to the right than the man in your picture...

At 9:11 PM, Blogger Aileen said...

dc disc- Of course a photo blog counts! Thanks for introducing yourself.

Dennis!- yup! his is. (no matter what all these other "dudes" say:)

free- that's what I'm sayin'.

josh- Hello! and thanks for blogging! :)

At 4:43 PM, Blogger Chris said...

We're coming out of the woodwork! Yep, another guy blogger here!

At 5:05 PM, Blogger steve said...

You are right... there are not as many male bloggers! It seems like all the male bloggers bunch up on the Ladies Blogs...(big surprise)
I started my blog last year to try to be able to write an EMail that made better sense than most I had been seeing, especially my own...
I've improved!
Landed here through Barbara@ lookin'2live.

At 5:25 PM, Blogger keeper said...

Ha...this is funny. I found this today...the day I entered the blog world & started my own. So unfortunately, I don't have alot to offer right now, but would love some comments on my "I'm calling the 2008 election" post.

At 3:46 AM, Blogger John said...

Male bloggers are there... I'm another one. Most men would rather write about a topic than their feelings or their life I think. I have two to feed that outlet.

This one: and .

At 2:21 PM, Anonymous Big Head Rob Lover said...

Big Head Rob of bigheadDC.com is hands down the hottest male blogger.

At 1:46 PM, Blogger soubriquet said...

What is this myth?

I am a man. I blog.
Not necessarily well mind you, and not daily, but not just boygeek stuff either.
Come and visit!

Um.Though I was thinking of posting a video of a UK motoring programme.. Which would rather reinforce the stereotype...
I'll do that later.

Oh and I don't look at all like the young self-absorbed narcissus you illustrated with. Thank God...

Two more male bloggers I admire.
Dodderyoldfart at restarea300 has a lot of work related blogs at his site.
Hanan Levin, at Growabrain, his visitor count is at over seven million now.
